1942

Florida human population reaches 1.9 million, more than double the 1920 census.

1943

Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission established as a constitutional agency.

1944
Collier-Seminole State Park established. (See Map)

1946

Stanley P. Young and Edward A. Goldman, biologists with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, publish The Puma: Mysterious American Cat.

Florida puma (Felis concolor coryi) listed as 1 of 30 subspecies of Felis concolor in North and South America and described as "A medium-sized, dark subspecies, with pelage short and stiff; skull with broad, flat frontal region; nasals remarkably broad and high arched or expanded upward." (p. 235)


1947-50

Everglades National Park established in 1947. (See Map)

1950

FIRST REGULATION OF PANTHER HUNTING
Florida panther was declared a game species to be taken only during deer season or as a nuisance.

1954

Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary established. (See Map)

Piper stock (Florida panthers with some South American cougar ancestry) released in Everglades National Park.

1958

Florida panther listed under state law as an endangered species.
